THE INSTITUTE TODAY
Today, the Institute represents an interdisciplinary unit with its major scientific
interests devoted to bioorganic chemistry, stereochemistry, molecular biology
of nucleic acids, their gene organization and function, genetics of higher plants,
human molecular genetics, X-ray analysis of proteins and nucleic acids, bioinformatics
and phytochemistry.
At present, the Institute with 274 employees including 19 full professors, 9
associate professors, 33 assistant professors, 37 Ph.D. students is organized
into ten laboratories. These
laboratories have a broad intellectual autonomy, in addition they receive a
part of the Institute budget for their own granting activities .
In 1994 Poznan Supercomputing
and Networking Center affiliated to the Institute was established.
The Institute puts strong emphasis on teaching on the undergraduate and graduate
level. In 1994, the Institute formalized graduate student program by establishing
the Ph.D. Graduate School. There
are also 57 students working on their M.Sc. thesis in the Institute's laboratories.
Since 1994 the Institute has been located in a newly constructed 4-wing building
which represents an interesting example of functionally designed architecture
in a central part of the city. The Institute has 6000 sq. meters of laboratory
space and 150 sq. meters green house for research. In addition, the Institute
is the owner of an adjacent conference center 5000 sq. meters) with a library,
lecture and seminar halls, and 55-bed complex of guest rooms.
